Biography

Winona Laura Horowitz was born on October 29, 1971 in Olmsted County, Minnesota. She was named for the nearby city of Winona, Minnesota. Her mother is a writer, Cindy Istas and her father, also a writer and close associate of Timothy Leary, is Michael Horowitz. In addition to his being a friend of her parent's Timothy Leary, who died in 1996, was also her godfather. She has three siblings, Yuri, Jubal and Sunyata. When she was seven years old she and her family moved to a commune in California called Rainbow. They lived there with seven other families with no direct electricity into their living quarters, and thus no television. Her mother, however, was fond of showing her films on screen in the barn and this was where she developed an interest in acting.

When Winona was ten years old the family moved again to Petaluma, California. During her first week in junior high she was harassed by a group of students and she was subsequently home schooled that year. Later that year she started attending the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco and began her first acting lessons there.

When she was fourteen she sent an audition tape in for the movie Desert Bloom but did not win the part. The following year however, writer and director David Seltzer cast her for Lucas. When choosing a name for the credits of Lucas she chose Ryder because her father was listening to a Mitch Ryder album during the phone conversation. She followed Lucas with Square Dance in 1987 and Beetlejuice in 1988. This second film won her critical and audience attention and her career took off from there.

Over the following years she has appeared in dozens of films, most notably: The Age of Innocence, Edward Sissorhands, Mermaids, Dracula, Little Women, Girl Interrupted, Autumn in New York and Mr. Deeds. She has several projects due out within the next few years and continues to be a dominating presence in the film industry.
